What Does a Reiki Session Look Like

For those who have not yet encountered Reiki, alongside questions like what Reiki is, how it works, and what its effects are, the questions what does a Reiki session look like and what to expect from a Reiki session are probably among the first to arise.

That is why I will walk through the whole story here — especially because a quick search can turn up all kinds of information, and it is not always easy to tell what is genuinely useful and what is not.

A Reiki session is a gentle method of energy work that supports relaxation, inner balance, and the natural processes of regeneration of body and mind.

During the session the person rests — usually lying down or sitting — while the practitioner places hands on the body or holds them close to it, depending on the approach and what the person finds most comfortable.

Although Reiki is one, the approach to a session can vary depending on the school, the personality of the practitioner, and the way someone has developed their own practice. This is my approach.

What a Reiki session usually looks like

A Reiki session is most often carried out with the practitioner placing hands on specific positions on the body of the person receiving the session. Another option is to hold the hands above the body — which also depends on the approach and the preference of the person receiving Reiki. The session can be received lying down or sitting.

Ideally one lies down so the body can relax more deeply — usually on a massage table. The space where the Reiki session takes place is prepared to support peace and relaxation. The lighting is softly dimmed, candles are lit, incense is burning, and gentle music can be heard in the background. Together, these elements create a comfortable and calming atmosphere in which you can surrender to the session.

During the session we are most often in silence to support relaxation and complete presence. But if during the session you feel the need to say something, share an impression, or ask a question, that is completely fine.

The duration of a session is individual and depends on the person and what is being worked on. It usually lasts between 30 and 45 minutes.

Before the session

Before the session we usually spend about ten minutes in easy conversation — most often over tea or a glass of water. One purpose of this is to let whatever has built up through the day slowly fall away, making it easier for you to relax and focus on yourself. The other is to open space for the theme that is currently important to you and that we can work on further during the session.

When we meet for the first time, it is important to go through a few basic questions about the reason for coming and whether you have any chronic issues or diagnoses, so that I can approach the session in the most appropriate way.

After the session

After the session I like to leave another ten minutes of quiet. In that space we can briefly reflect on the experience, impressions, or answer questions that may have opened during the session.

It is often helpful after a session to:

  • drink some water
  • give yourself a little space
  • not rush into stressful obligations right away, if that is not necessary
  • pay attention to how you feel for the rest of the day

Every Reiki session is individual

With all of the above in mind, it is important to take one key thing into account — every Reiki session is individual.

This means that as a practitioner I fully adapt to what you need in that moment and the way it is most natural for you to receive it.

During a Reiki session some people feel warmth, a gentle current, or drowsiness. Some will want to talk, and some may cry. Sometimes various sensations can appear in the body, such as tingling or a passing tension in a particular area. And it can also happen that you feel none of that.

And that is fine.

Some feel deep peace, and others only notice more lightness, stillness, and calm after the session than before.

It is my job to ensure that the whole process is adapted to you and that your experience is as safe, natural, and comfortable as possible.

Is Reiki for everyone?

Reiki suits many people precisely because it is a gentle and non-invasive approach.

It is especially sought by people who want to:

  • slow down
  • relax body and mind
  • reduce the feeling of stress and overwhelm
  • create space for themselves
  • support their own inner balance

It is important to emphasise that Reiki is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment, or psychological or psychiatric support when needed — it is a complementary practice of support.

In summary: what you can expect from a Reiki session

If we were to summarise everything in one sentence, the answer to the question what does a Reiki session look like would be this:

A Reiki session is a calm, gentle, and supportive experience in which you do not have to “perform” anything — you simply come, relax, and allow yourself a moment for yourself.

Frequently asked questions about a Reiki session

No, you do not. It is enough to come in comfortable clothing and allow yourself a little time so you are not rushing. Everything else we handle together on the spot.

That is completely fine. Some people feel warmth, a current, or deep peace, while others have no pronounced sensations during the session itself. If this happens, it is usually the first time — when the body needs a little time to relax and the energy to begin moving. It does not mean the session was not for you or that it did not work.

It depends on the person, the reason for coming, and what you want to support. For some one session is enough as a space for reset and relaxation, while others want continuity over a certain period.

For chronic conditions or illness, a series of around ten sessions over the course of a month is often recommended.

Yes. Sometimes during a session space opens for emotions, tears, or inner relief. This is a natural part of the process and there is nothing wrong with it.

No. Reiki is a gentle approach and a session should be a comfortable, calm, and safe experience.

The energy session itself usually lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, and with the introductory and closing conversation it is best to set aside around 90 minutes so the whole encounter can unfold in complete peace.
